Scribing Molding to Fit a Wall

Scribing is the process of marking a piece of wood to indicate where a cut is necessary. When you are installing molding on your wall, an irregularity on the wall means that the molding will sit unevenly. Scribe your molding to ensure that you will be able to cut it as necessary. This simple process will make installing molding in your home significantly easier and it will give you a tight professional fit between the molding and the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the molding against the wall where you know there is an irregularity.

    • 2

Place a sharp pencil against the wall, perpendicular to the molding and with the point of the pencil to the edge of the molding.

    • 3

Drag the pencil along the wall, allowing the point to leave a mark on the molding itself. The pencil will create a wavy line on the molding as opposed to a straight one when it hits an uneven spot on the wall. You can use this line to guide you when you trim the molding down to fit the wall.
