How to Make an Insulated Room Divider

Measure the space where the room divider will be placed with a tape measure. Record the measurements for the length and width of the space with pen and paper.

Double the length and add 6 inches to the width. Use these measurements to cut your fabric to size with scissors.

Hem the edges of the fabric to avoid fraying and loose threads.

Locate the studs on the walls on either side of the area where the divider will hang, using a stud finder. Mark the studs with blue painter's tape; the tape won't damage your walls when it is carefully pulled away.

Measure across the space where the room divider will go, stretching the tape measure from stud to stud, and mark each spot with painter's tape.

Cut a 2-by-2 piece of wood or 2-inch PVC pipe to size, based upon the measurement you took in Step 5, using a small handsaw to create your own curtain rod. Alternately, you may use a curtain rod and adjust it to the appropriate size.

Attach 2-inch wall brackets, 2 inches apart, on the marked spots on the wall with a power drill and 1/2 inch screws.

Screw one end of the curtain rod to the brackets using a power drill and 1/2-inch screws. Pre-fabricated curtain rods will have screw holes already in place; you will need to drill your own if you are using wood or piping. You may need to have an assistant support the other end of the rod while you work.

Repeat this process with the other end of the rod, using a level to ensure you are installing it evenly across the space.

Hang the fabric over the rod and even the ends so the single piece of fabric creates a two-layer curtain.

Cut a 1/4-inch foam piece to size based upon your original measurements (before you doubled and added the extra inches), using the handsaw.

Insert the piece of foam between the two layers of fabric. Use pins or tacks to hold the foam in place as you work.

Sew the bottom edges of the fabric together with needle and thread.
