Do-It-Yourself Wall Canopy

A canopy adds instant appeal to a bed, making it the focal point of a bedroom. In a child's bedroom, a canopy creates a whimsical look; in an adult's bedroom, a canopy adds a romantic and private touch to the bed area. Though canopies are typically hung over four-poster beds, you can create a canopy effect for your bed if you don't have a four-poster by installing fabric on the wall behind the bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how wide you want the canopy to be. Use a measuring tape to measure the wall behind the bed to determine the width of the canopy.

    • 2

Decide the height from which you want the canopy to hang on the wall. For example, you may want the canopy to hang near the top of the wall,or you may want it to hang from the center of the wall. Use a measuring tape to measure the distance from the location you want the canopy to hang from to the floor.

    • 3

Purchase a curtain rod that is equal to the dimension you arrived at in Step 1. Select a curtain rod that coordinates with your bedroom: wrought iron in a rustic room or brushed nickel in a contemporary space, for example.

    • 4

Purchase a curtain that is equal to the dimensions you arrived at in Step 1 and Step 2. Fabrics to consider include organza, tulle, satin, silk or velvet. You may need to purchase two or three curtains to equal the desired width of the canopy.

    • 5

Install the curtain rod hardware on the wall at the location where you want the top of the canopy to sit. Use a level while installing the hardware to ensure it sits straight on the wall.

    • 6

Place the curtains onto the curtain rod. Set the curtain rod onto the curtain rod hardware. Straighten and smooth out the fabric on the wall.
