How to Adjust a Home Barometer

A barometer measures atmospheric air pressure and can be useful when developing a short term forecast of the weather in your area. When high or rising air pressure is indicated on the barometer, clear and cool weather can be expected. When the pressure is low or falling, warmer and more unsettled weather may be ahead. A barometer requires an initial adjustment to calibrate it to the ambient pressure in your locality. You can adjust your barometer with basic do-it-yourself skills.

    • 1

Call your local radio or television weather station or check online to acquire the barometric pressure in your region. You need this information to make an accurate barometer adjustment.

    • 2

Find the barometer adjusting screw. The screw is located on the back of the instrument slightly recessed within a small hole and is connected to the indicator needle on the dial.

    • 3

Turn the adjusting screw slowly in either direction using a small flat-head screwdriver. Observe the indicator needle on the dial as you turn the screw.

    • 4

Adjust the indicator until it matches the barometric air pressure reading for your area.
