How to Make a Casing on Stucco Windows

Stucco is easy to apply and lasts well if it is treated correctly, but the rough surface presents a challenge when it comes to trim. Casing gives your windows some visual variety, whether you apply it in horizontal or vertical lines or around windows. But you need to use foam casing over stucco. Foam casing glued to stucco is light enough that it does not pull the stucco away from the wall, and it is available in many styles.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Foam casing
  • Power saw with masonry blade
  • Miter saw
  • Broom
  • Nylon brush
  • Construction adhesive
  • Masking tape
  • Clear silicone caulk

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the edges of the window that need casing, and add twice the width of the trim to each measurement. By adding twice the width of the trim to each measurement, you are able to completely enclose the window with casing.

    • 2

Cut foam casing to the measurements from Step 1 using a power saw fitted with a masonry blade.

    • 3

Bevel the end of each piece of foam casing to 45 degrees using a miter saw.

    • 4

Sweep the area where you want to apply the casing using a broom and a nylon brush. This clears away the debris.

    • 5

Apply an S-shaped line of construction adhesive along the flat side of the foam casing. The S-shape helps the casing stick to the stucco.

    • 6

Press the foam casing to the stucco wall, and hold it there for several seconds to allow the adhesive to grab.

    • 7

Reinforce the bond as the adhesive cures by applying several lines of masking tape to hold the casing to the wall.

    • 8

Allow the adhesive to cure completely. This typically takes about 24 hours.

    • 9

Squeeze silicone caulk into any gaps that you can see between the stucco wall and the trim, and scrape away any excess using a putty knife. The silicone caulk covers any unattractive gaping while holding the trim securely to the wall.
