How to Install a Pulley System for Outdoor Curtains

Outdoor patio curtains have become popular additions to modern homes. Outdoor kitchen, dining and lounging rooms are created on patios by enclosing the spaces in curtain walls. You can install a simple double-draw pulley system to operate the curtains,. The double-draw system allows you to draw the left side of the curtains by using a cord on the right-side post, and draw the right side of the curtains by using a cord on the left-side post. You can attach this simple pulley system, similar to clothesline pulley systems and just as easy to operate, in less than an hour.

Attach a double side-by-side pulley to the outside of one corner post. One-third of the pulley body should overhang the outside back corner of the post. Place the pulleys 1 inch above curtain height. Use the bracket and fasteners provided with the pulleys to attach them to the post.

Attach a second double side-by-side pulley of the same size beneath the first so that the pulley wheels of the bottom set touch the underside of the top set. Repeat your pulley attachment on the post on the opposite side of the curtain span.

Screw a medium-sized screw eye 4 inches below the pulleys on the outside center of the same post to which the pulleys are attached. Attach a tension pulley 6 inches off the ground, centered on the same side as the screw eye. Repeat for the second post.

Thread curtain cord up over the top outside pulley, across to the top outside pulley of the second post. Take the cord around and between the top and bottom outside pulley and back across and between the top and bottom outside pulley on the first post. Thread the cord downward through the screw eye.
