How to Make an Acrylic Sheet Shower Partition

Acrylic sheet is a common alternative for sheet glass in shower applications where a large shower environment is divided into private sections for individual use. The acrylic sheet allows light to pass through while the numerous designs and colors can provide excellent privacy. The product is much lighter and easier to work with than glass, and it isn't subject to breakage as easily as glass. Installing the partitions can usually be done by a handy person using off-the-shelf installation hardware.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the shower partition wall from the inside of the front entry wall to the back wall. Deduct the amount recommended by the U-bracket manufacturer for installation. Measure the height of the panel from the floor to the ceiling and deduct the bracket amount. Typically, the brackets can be mounted to the shower surfaces first, and the acrylic is inserted after the brackets are in place.

Draw straight lines on the surfaces where you want to mount your brackets. Allow for two brackets at the top and bottom and at least three brackets on the height sides at the front and back. Evenly space your brackets along your lines.

    • 3

Drill through the bracket into the tile or stone using a carbide tipped drill that is kept wet while drilling. Apply clear silicone over the bracket holes. Place the bracket over the holes and screw the bracket in place. Wipe off the excess silicone that squeezes out. Repeat for all of the brackets.

Open the adjustment and installation screws on the brackets by unscrewing each a turn or two. The adjustment screws are on the side of the bracket. Insert the acrylic sheet into one side and the top. Press the sheet tight to the bottom of the brackets. This will allow the other two edges of the acrylic to pass the other side and the bottom. Center the sheet in the remaining brackets.

Place scrap wood under the bottom acrylic to lift it half way inside the top bracket. Place scrap wood between the side acrylic and the wall to center the acrylic in the side brackets. Tighten the adjustment screws with a screwdriver on all of the brackets to hold the panel in place.
