Do-It-Yourself Redone Pressed Wood Cabinets

Redecorating a kitchen on a shoestring budget often means having to work with the existing cabinetry. If the furniture is pressed wood covered in faux wood laminate, it could be a hard sell. At least it used to be. With a few quick steps, flat pack cabinets can be repainted and given a newer, more elegant look.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cabinet doors. It is easier to reach the entire cabinet with the doors removed.

    • 2

Sand the surface of the cabinets and doors with a palm sander equipped with 220-grit sandpaper until the surface starts to show white specs.

    • 3

Wipe off the surface with a clean towel.

    • 4

Apply sanding sealer to the sanded surface with a rag. Cover the entire surface and allow it to dry for six to eight hours.

    • 5

Apply primer to the laminate with a foam roller brush. Cover any areas that the roller brush cannot reach with a 2-inch foam brush and wait for the primer to cure. Primer has a cure time written in the "use" section of the instructions. Failing to wait the entire cure time will leave your paint job vulnerable to easy peeling.

Paint the primed furniture with foam brushes. Use at least two coats to ensure a nice finish.
