How to Install False Stair Treads

As the pathway from one level of a home to another, stairways are high-traffic zones. Since stairways are used often, over time, the treads, or the top portion of the stairs that are stepped on, often become worn. If your stair treads are showing signs of wear and tear, instead of replacing them altogether, top them with false treads. False stair treads act as a cover for existing stair treads and give a stairway an updated look without the hassle of removing and replacing the existing treads.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the surface of the existing stair treads with medium-grit sandpaper. Sanding the treads will remove any finish and offer a greater bond between the existing treads and the false treads.

    • 2

Vacuum the stairs to remove any dust and debris. Wipe down the treads with a damp cloth to further remove any excess dust and dirt.

    • 3

Apply wood glue to the back of a false stair tread. Apply the glue around the edges of the false tread and along the middle in a wavy line.

    • 4

Position the false tread in place over the existing tread. Press on the top of the false tread to create a bond between the treads and the glue.

    • 5

Hammer finishing nails along the edges and the back of the false stair tread to drive them into the existing stair tread.
