How to Make a Recessed Drawer Pull

Recessed drawer pulls are used to grip and open a drawer, much like a handle. The recess can be almost any shape or design and can accommodate any size fingers. This makes the design possibilities strong. Many modern drawers use a recessed pull because it is inexpensive and can make a powerful creative statement. It is a simple process to create a recessed pull.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a design on paper that will fit inside a 1 1/2-by-4-inch rectangle. Simple, strong shapes that form a distinctive outline are the most visually successful recessed pulls. Cut out your design with scissors to make a stencil or template.

    • 2

Place an empty drawer on its end. Center your drawing where you want to create the handle. Small drawers only need one handle in the center of the drawer. Larger drawers require two spaced pulls that are two-thirds the width of the drawer apart. Trace the drawing onto the drawer face.

    • 3

Drill a 3/8-inch hole inside your outline. Clamp the drawer to the table to hold it from moving. Cut around your outline using a jigsaw.

    • 4

Sand the inside edges of the cut until smooth and they glide easily on your fingers. Replace your drawer.
