How to Make a Bedroom Feel Airy

An airy bedroom is an inviting space to escape from day-to-day stress and relax. It should feel open, spacious and light, setting the room apart from the rest of your house. The spacious feeling can promote easier, more restful sleep and a better start to each day. An airy bedroom works well with minimalistic design; creating the look should require only a small amount of money, if any. To make a bedroom feel airy, set aside a day or two for redesign and soon you will have a light, relaxing space.

Paint or modify the walls and ceiling of the bedroom, if necessary. Colors such as white and light creams, blues, greens and grays will enhance the airy feeling of the bedroom. The walls and ceiling colors should match. If you decide to paint the bedroom, clear out all furniture, lay down plastic to protect the floor and apply a layer of primer first. Paint the walls and ceiling with one to two layers of interior paint per manufacturer’s instructions. Alternatively, you can purchase light fabric and pin it to the walls and ceiling to avoid repainting.

Remove all clutter from the bedroom, leaving only necessary items. Keep any dirty laundry, dishes and trash out of the bedroom at all times. If you have furniture you do not use, remove it as well. Ideally, all that should remain is the bed, a nightstand or two and a dresser. Minimal clutter opens up the bedroom, instantly creating an airy feeling.

Rearrange the bedroom. Your bed will be the focal point of the room, so place it in the center of a wall with space on either side. Place nightstands on either side of the bed and any large furniture, such as a dresser, on the opposite wall. Keep the furniture away from windows and high-traffic areas and try to leave at least two walls open to enhance the airy feeling.

Add one large decorative piece to accent the bedroom. Several small pieces clutter the bedroom, reducing the airy feeling. A large statue or painting keeps the room from feeling empty, while maintaining the airy appeal. A light theme to the decorative piece will solidify the room’s design. If you are on a budget and do not have anything on hand, look for deals at thrift shops and yard sales. Place the decorative piece in a corner, out of the way, so it does not interfere with the airflow through the bedroom.

Hang lightly colored, gauzy curtains around the bedroom’s windows. When the windows are open, even the lightest breeze will cause the curtains to flow and accentuate the airy design. Sunshine and moonlight shining through light curtains will create a relaxing, soft glow.
