Handmade Window Trim for a Log Cabin

Create your own window trim for your log cabin and add DIY touches to your cabin's rustic getaway look. Use fallen tree branches from your own backyard as trim or go the more conventional route using wooden slats painted in natural hues. Most trim can be attached to cabin walls with a hammer and nails. Use nails along the ends of each piece of trim to avoid splitting, particularly if using tree branches.
  1. Tree Branches

    • Use sawed and sanded tree branches for truly rustic log cabin window trim. Find branches that are 3 to 5 inches in diameter depending on the size and style of the windows. Thicker branches can be attached to the sides of windows with a curved tree branch on top to create an arched effect. Stain tree branches if desired to match log cabin flooring or fireplace mantels.

    Logs

    • The same type of log you used to build the cabin can be utilized as window trim. Use logs in a vertical fashion along the sides of the window that otherwise blend into the log cabin wall, or use halved logs on top of your existing wall. Stain the window trim so it stands out from the rest of the wall or use the same stain so it blends seamlessly.

    Colors

    • Use nature-inspired colors for log cabin window trim. Paint wooden trim in olive or other green colors, shades of tan and beige, and brown and blue hues. Find paint colors that match your log cabin's overall color scheme, such as brown and green. White is another option if your cabin features painted-white wooden furniture. Using white as your window trim color also provides the option of stenciling the trim with assorted nature-themed patterns or designs. Use wooden slats with angled edges to fit the trim around your windows.

    Shutters & Additional Trim Ideas

    • Wooden shutters may be used as window trim on the inside as well as the outside of your log cabin. Use shutters that match the length of your windows, and use wooden logs or slats as horizontal window trim. Paint or stain the shutters as desired. Additional window trim ideas include wrapping thick tree branches in assorted nature-inspired fabric or wallpaper as more unconventional log cabin window trim.
