Measure the transom window for a valance. Note the length and height of the window.
Install a curtain rod above or on the transom frame.
Add a second rod at the bottom of the transom and select curtains with rod pockets at the top and bottom for a shirred treatment. This works best on stationary transoms.
Control the amount of light coming through the transom and protect your privacy by choosing blinds or shades. Room-darkening blinds and shades are ideal for bedroom transoms because they shut out the bright sunlight. This is useful for late sleepers and night workers. Cellular shades provide temperature control by creating an insulating barrier to prevent heating or cooling loss.
Pick the color and style of shade that fits the decor of the room. Match curtain colors and patterns however you like.
Hang the blind or shade with a cord long enough to operate the blind yet out of the reach of children and pets, or upgrade to a shade with a remote control.
Decorate the transom glass by applying a decorative film to the transom pane. Choose a stained-glass pattern, an etched pattern or any other colorful film design that suits your decor.
Create your own designs by using kits for stained glass or etching or other designs. Find these kits at craft stores.
Paint the transom pane for permanent coverage. To blend the transom into its surroundings rather than call attention to it, paint the frame and pane the same color as the walls or as the door or window frame below.
