How to Build Your Own Poly Furniture

Transform PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) pipe, also known as industrial grade plastic pipe or poly pipe, into budget-friendly, fashionable and comfortable household furniture. End tables, tables, chairs, lamps, bed frames and bunk beds are easily constructed with basic do-it-yourself tools and skills. PVC pipe furniture is ideal for children's rooms, decks, patios and rec rooms. PVC pipe furniture is weather resistant, sturdy and virtually indestructible. Traditional poly pipe is available in a special grade designed for furniture construction. Both pipe and all fittings are available in white, blue, yellow and red. Mix and match colors to create your own unique designs.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw out a sketch of the furniture piece you wish to create. Simplified Building Products, an online distributor of PVC pipe, provides a free downloadable tool to sketch out your project. Make a complete list of all the supplies you will need, including lengths of PVC pipe, fittings and end caps. Furniture-grade PVC comes in 5- and 10-foot lengths.

    • 2

Assemble your materials. You will need a tape measure and marker pen to measure out and mark the lengths of pipe prior to cutting.

    • 3

Use a hacksaw to cut the PVC pipe to the lengths required. Attach fittings according to your design. Assembly is easy and quick. Tap joints, connectors and pipe together with a small rubber mallet. Determine if you wish to glue your project together with clear PVC cement or use quick-release fittings that allow you to disassemble the furniture for easy moving or storage.
