How to Decorate Your Room Around a Driftwood Coffee Table

Driftwood washes onto the shores every day, full of unusual colors and textures. The motion of the water lapping against the wood, combined with the exposure to sea air turns the wood a muted shade of brown or gray. Designers create coffee tables from the pieces, which become the focal point of any room. Decorating around a driftwood coffee table involves picking the right colors and textures for your other decorations.
  1. Coffee Table Designs

    • Designers often use larger pieces of driftwood as the base for a table with a large round or rectangular glass piece on top. You also may find designs with a wood top attached to the driftwood. Some designs even use a large piece of flat driftwood as the tabletop and curved pieces as the legs. Build your room around the type of coffee table that matches your taste.

    Color Choices

    • Paint the walls a neutral color, such as light tan or cream. The neutral colors of the wall pick up the shades in the driftwood without overwhelming the room. If you have a darker coffee table, the walls highlight the table. Consider using shades of pale blue and green as opposed to neutral colors. The lighter shades mimic the colors found in the ocean and creates a natural look in the space.

    Other Furnishings

    • Bring in new pieces of furniture that match or complement the new wall color. A cream-colored couch with tan chairs mimic the neutral colors in the driftwood. The lighter colors mimic the shades found on the shore where the driftwood washes up. Arrange a few brightly colored cushions around the couch and chairs surrounding the coffee table. When you only use neutral colors, you risk the room looking too bland or dull. Adding a few pops of color breaks up the overall lighter-colored room.

    Other Decorations

    • Hang at least one piece of driftwood art on the wall in the room. A mirror surrounded by pieces of driftwood, a driftwood sculpture or a driftwood pendant light are good choices. The new piece mimics the lines and shapes of the coffee table. If you like the coastal theme, use Cape Cod elements around the room, such as nautical striped throw pillows, lighthouse-shaped decorations, ropes and replica life preservers.
