Redoing Kitchen Cabinet Hinge Hardware

Give your kitchen cabinets a new look without breaking the bank by updating the front of the cabinets. While the cabinets themselves should be a focus of this update, so should the hinges. The hinges are an integral part of the cabinets and highly visible, so redoing them will add to the look of your cabinets. Remove the hinges on your cabinets then update them with a fresh coat of paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the hinges from the cabinets with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Clean the hinges to prepare them for a fresh coat of paint. Soak the hinges in warm, soapy water then wipe them down with a clean cloth to remove any dirt and grim. If the hinges are rusted, use a rust remover solution and follow the manufacturer's directions for application.

    • 3

Purchase spray paint that is made for metal. Choose a color that coordinates with your cabinets to create a cohesive look; black paint with black lacquered cabinets, for example. Alternatively, select a color that pops out against the color of your cabinets, such as gold with light wood cabinets or silver with darker cabinets.

Lay the hinges face-up on a flat surface covered in newspaper. Shake the paint can and hold it at a 45-degree angle 6 inches away from the hinge. Spray the can in a back and forth motion, applying the paint evenly over the surface of the hinge. Allow the paint to dry for 12 hours. Flip the hinge over and paint the backside in the same manner.

Allow the hinges to dry completely for about 12 hours. Apply a second coat of spray paint to the hinges if necessary.

    • 6

Reattach the hinges to the cabinets.
