The Basics of Framing Fireplaces With a Mantle

If the area surrounding the fireplace seems plain and unattractive, consider adding a mantle. A mantle highlights the fireplace and gives you an opportunity to display decorative items. While most mantles can easily surround a basic fireplace, make sure the mantel is correctly framed in finishing the look, allowing the fireplace and mantel to freely flow together.
  1. Size

    • Consider the mantel’s overall size. The mantle is large enough to outline the fireplace entrance and the surrounding brick or stone. Measure the fireplace’s diameter and record any differences in the width from the fireplace and the wall. Make sure that the mantle fits snugly against the wall and the fireplace’s trim. Other needed measurements are the hearth’s width at the firebox’s base and any type permanent stone or marble header.

    Style

    • Consider the mantel’s style when getting ready to frame in your fireplace. Some common style options include traditional, rustic and ornate. A traditional style is simple in design. There may be columns that support each side and beaded molding. A rustic style is often made from timber wood or logs, and creates a natural appearance. An ornate or intricate design is suitable if home is Victorian or Gothic. Each of these mantles requires custom trim blending the firebox and mantel.

    Use

    • Take into consideration the mantle’s use. If it is strictly for decorating, ensure that it is solid in structure and strong enough to support the decorative items and pieces. You may have to add additional support into the wall and through the hearth. If your mantle is just accentuating your fireplace, not as much reinforcement is needed.

    Materials

    • Not all mantles are made of wood. Other common materials include marble and cast stone. Most marble fireplace mantels need custom fitting and often require an upfront deposit or payment in full because of the expense. Custom work may also need to be done in the home tying in the fireplace and the mantle. Cast stone materials may be custom cut, beveled and designed accommodating the hearth and fireplace.
