Bohemian Window Ideas

A mesh of elements from different cultures, the Bohemian style features vibrant, bold and eclectic decorating elements. If you're interested in creating a lively room that is full of color, texture and patterns, a Bohemian style may be the right choice for you. When decorating a room in this style, add interest to the windows with treatments that reflect a lively look.
  1. Colorful Fabrics

    • Cover the windows with flowing, colorful fabrics. A bold color scheme and patterns are central to Bohemian style so use materials that incorporate both elements. Drape saris or materials that resemble saris across the windows. Turn colorful tapestries into window coverings. Color options include turquoise, fuchsia, jade and saffron. Materials that contain decorative scroll work, paisley or any other type of eye-catching pattern are well-suited for this design. Beaded or mirrored fabrics are also options that will tie into the Bohemian style. Drape the materials over curtain rods so that they cover the entire window or use them to create valances.

    Beads

    • Beads are another option that works as window treatments in a Bohemian-styled room. Strands of colorful beads create a striking impact when hung over the windows; and as the sun hits them and reflects off of them, they'll add even more interest to the space. Suspend beads that are designed to hang over doorways from the top of the window frame and allow them to hang down over the window. For a more personalized look, use individual strands of glass or crystal beads -- as many you'd like in any color combination. Secure the ends of the beads over the top of the window frame by making a loop in the end of each strand and inserting push pins through the loops.

    Shutters

    • Add architectural interest to the windows with shutters. Purchase a pair of traditional plantation shutters and jazz them up before hanging them over the windows. Paint the shutters in a vibrant color, such as turquoise or purple. When the pain dries, rub sandpaper over the shutters to give them an aged appearance. To add further detail, paint decorative designs on the shutters with gold or silver paint. Install the shutters so that they hang on either side of the window. Leave them open when you want to let light in or close them for privacy.

    Painted Windows

    • Give your windows the look of stained glass with paint. Select colors of window paint from craft supply stores in shades that suit your taste and that work with the Bohemian style. Use the paint to create decorative images directly on the window panes. Use your imagination to create interesting patterns. When the paint dries, the sun will shine through the images, creating a warm, colorful glow in the room.
