A DIY Basement Divider

Create separate entertainment or work spaces in your basement with a project that can be completed in just a few hours. Basements are often single rooms that run the entire length of your home without clear definition. Room dividers create temporary rooms within these areas. You can remove the dividers to suit your family's changing needs. The result is a fashionable solution that clearly defines each space in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the wood boards well with the sandpaper. In a well-ventilated area, stain or paint the wood in a color that suits your taste.

    • 2

Choose a fabric that complements your basement decor. Purchase 7 1/2 yards of fabric and cut it into three sections measuring 2 1/2 yards each. Choose between more expensive silks or satin or use simple cotton material for your room divider. Iron or steam the fabric to ensure a smooth appearance.

    • 3

Create three separate screens by laying two of the 7-feet long pieces of trim on the floor 36 inches apart. Repeat this for the other two screens.

    • 4

Run a wavy line of construction adhesive down each piece of wood. Place the fabric on top of the wood. Most bolts of fabric are 44 inches wide, so you will need to cut the overlapping pieces with pinking shears to prevent the material from fraying.

    • 5

Run another wavy line of the glue on top along the edges of the fabric. Place the other two 7-feet long trim pieces on top of the fabric and press them firmly on top of the adhesive. Clamp the wood together with C-clamps for one hour while the glue sets.

    • 6

Finish framing the screens by screwing the 3-feet long pieces of trim across the top and bottom of the wood with 3-inch screws. Flip them over and screw the matching pieces into place.

    • 7

Screw a pair of casters to the bottom of each screen. Connect the three screens with door hinges screwed into the tops and bottoms of the frames with 1-inch screws. Place the screens between the areas you wish to divide, bending the outer frames a couple of inches in opposite directions to balance it.
