Decorating With a Natural Color Palette

A simple way to give any space in your home a soothing look is with a natural color palette. Create a relaxing respite using hues inspired by natural elements, such as the sky and sea. Even when you can't be outdoors, the color scheme will remind you of your favorite places.
  1. Ocean-Inspired

    • Use a blue color palette to give your home a natural, beach-inspired look even if you are a city dweller. Use your favorite beach vacation photos as a guide when choosing the color scheme. Paint bedroom or living room walls a sea glass blue color, and decorate with a mix of turquoise and sea foam green furniture and textiles. Incorporate sandy neutrals into the look as well. For instance, decorate a tan couch with a mix of blue and green pillows and place a matching rug on tile or hardwood floors.

    Forest-Inspired

    • If one of your favorite hobbies is hiking through the woods, surround yourself with a color palette inspired by mother nature. Paint bedroom or bathroom walls a deep forest green to set the tone for the style. Enhance a cream-colored couch or bed comforter with a mix of green and brown pillows. Fill in empty room corners with potted ferns and other houseplants. Choose furniture items, such a coffee table or dresser and nightstand set made out of natural wood, such as oak or mahogany.

    Garden-Inspired

    • Spending time in a vibrant, garden-inspired room will be an instant pick-me-up. Use a lush color palette featuring sunny yellow and bright orange, red, green and pink to update the master bedroom, bathroom or home office. Paint the walls a tulip yellow color, and choose white wicker furnishings, such as a bed headboard and dresser set, desk or vanity table. Place a large floral-patterned rug in the center of the room as a focal point. Decorate a white quilt with vibrantly colored throw pillows and a matching blanket. Fill vases with fresh daisies, roses and other garden flowers and display them on shelves.

    Desert-Inspired

    • If deserts are your happy place, design a room inspired by the southwest. Use a combination of spicy colors and warm, sunset hues when decorating. Paint bedroom or living room walls a rich red or burnt orange shade, and place a large rug featuring a southwestern motif in the middle of the room. Incorporate turquoise accents, such as flower vases and lamp bases, into the look for vibrancy. Display cacti in terracotta pots as an authentic touch.
