How to Cover a Dishwasher

A dishwasher in older homes or apartments can look dated and unattractive. Covering your dishwasher either hides it from view or transforms its outer appearance, depending on the method you choose. Select one that fits your style and blends with the kitchen decor.

Install a short curtain that extends from the countertop to the floor covering the dishwasher. Screw two eyehooks into the side of the countertop above the dishwasher. Place the eyehooks on either side of the dishwasher and string a curtain wire between the two. Measure from the wire to the floor and cut a piece of fabric to that height and a width that’s double that of the dishwasher. Clip the fabric to the wire with curtain clips. Push to the side whenever you need to use the dishwasher.

Cover the front of the dishwasher with a product such as contact paper. Select a pattern that livens up the kitchen or a muted color blending with the rest of your appliances. Remove the paper backing from your product and unroll it so it fits across the dishwasher’s front. Running a flat object, such as the side of a credit card, across the surface removes air bubbles. Cut it to proper size with a razorblade.

Create your own custom artwork on the dishwasher door covering its original appearance. Paint on the surface with high-gloss acrylic, cover it with magnets or stickers in a pattern or make a tile mosaic on the front.
