How to Build a Basement Tiki Bar

If you wish your basement felt more like a tropical paradise and less like a basement, you can transform the space into a tiki bar where you and your family and friends can relax. One of the best parts of decorating a tiki bar is that -- in keeping with the relaxed nature of island living -- no set rules apply to this decor. You can decorate however you choose, as long as it embraces the tropical theme.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn an old dresser or bookcase backward. It should be hollowed out to leave only the frame and be no taller than chest height. The back of the dresser is the front of your tiki bar.

    • 2

Drill small holes in the bar. These will be used to tie on your bamboo. Start by drilling two holes in each side and four holes on the front; if you need more later to keep your bamboo in place, you can add them.

    • 3

Wrap your bamboo around the sides and front of the bar. Thread galvanized wire through the holes and lash it to the bamboo to hold it on. Trim off any excess bamboo from the ends.

    • 4

Attach flower leis and grass skirts to the bar for added island flavor and texture. Decorate the bar top with sea shells and a tiki idol.

    • 5

Decorate the rest of the basement to match the bar. Use bright, island-inspired colors that you might see on a flower lei. Prop up surfboards and display island souvenirs like sea shells and jars of sand. Keep the room well-lit with electric tiki torches when you're indoors. Use natural-looking wood furniture for seating and burn candles with tropical aromas.
