How to Arrange the Top of a Dresser

Although it's one of the first things you see in the morning and one of the last things you see at night, the top of a dresser often becomes an unsightly catchall for loose change and extra buttons. With thought and planning, the dresser can retain its functionality while becoming an attractive focal point in the room. Arranging a dresser can be a complex grouping of decorative elements, or it may be as simple as a couple of carefully placed objects.

  Cover the top of the dresser, if necessary. While some dresser tops are attractive, others benefit from a draped scarf, carpet or a piece of fabric that matches the color scheme of the room.

  Place necessary objects on your dresser. Once they are in place, you can add decorative elements. Necessary objects can include a lamp, jewelry box, a clock or an attractive container or bowl for loose change, keys and small objects.

  Decorate the top of your dresser with a few of your favorite objects, such as family pictures, a piece of glassware, candles, seashells or a vase filled with flowers.

  Place decorative items in groups of odd numbers to provide interest and visual impact. Groupings of three to five items are effective, but unless your dresser top is very large, more items may appear cluttered.

  Arrange the objects with taller elements in the back and smaller items toward the front.

  Group similar items together. Items may be related by color, shape or size. Don't place similarly sized items in a straight line. Instead, add interest by elevating one or two of the objects on small stands or pedestals.
