How to Hang an Old Door Sideways

Antique doors aren't just functional, they add a touch of interest to any decor. Depending on the type of wood it's made out of, an antique door can weigh up to 50 pounds. Because a door is a relatively heavy object to suspend from a ceiling, locating ceiling joists is imperative. Otherwise, you could end up with large holes in your ceiling plaster.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the ceiling joists near the area where you wish to hang the door. To find ceiling joists, you can pass an electric stud finder over the area, or you can tap on the ceiling with your knuckles. If you hear a hollow sound, you haven't found the joist. If you hear a solid sound, you've found the joist. In most homes, ceiling joists are spaced roughly 16 to 24 inches apart.

Insert heavy-duty ceiling hooks into the ceiling joists. Using a tape measure, record the distance between the ceiling hooks. Because you'll be hanging the door sideways, insert the two screw eyes into the door's edge making sure they are the same distance apart as the ceiling hooks.

Snip two lengths of picture wire. The lengths should measure the same distance you wish your door to hang from the ceiling, plus an extra 12 inches. The extra 12 inches are so you can tie the wire around the screw eyes. Tie triple knots to ensure the connections are secure.

Hang the door by tying the picture wire to the ceiling hooks. You'll need someone to help you hold the door while you tie the wire to the hooks. Tie a triple knot in the wire as you secure it to the ceiling hooks. Before you allow the door to hang on its own, test it to make sure it's secure.
