How to Decorate With a Monochromatic Scheme

Decorating a room with a monochromatic color means using one color throughout the space. You can use different shades of the same color to create a varied look. Incorporate neutrals, such as white or taupe, into the scheme to break up the color. A monochromatic color scheme can work for any room in your home.
  1. Blue

    • Give a living room a sophisticated look with an all-blue color scheme. Start by painting the walls a soft sky blue to set the stage for the look. Decorate with a dark blue upholstered couch and love seat. Enhance them with light blue decorative pillows and throw blankets. Place medium blue rugs on hardwood or tile floors. Display blue votives in gold or silver candle holders on wall shelves or a coffee table.

    Yellow

    • Decorating a room in shades of yellow will result in a warm, sunny style. Paint a bedroom's walls in butter yellow. Hang white, gauzy curtains to catch the breezes. Decorate the room with white wicker bedroom furniture, such as a bed headboard, dresser and night stand. A quilt or comforter and matching decorative pillows in lemon yellow will complement the casual furniture. Place fresh yellow flowers, such as roses or tulips, in a vase on a nightstand or dresser.

    Purple

    • Design a bathroom fit for a queen with a royal purple color scheme. Cover the walls with lavender to create a soothing look. Hang a dark purple cloth shower curtain from gold hooks. Select gold-tone bathroom accessories, such as a toothbrush holder and sink cup. Complete the look with plush, dark purple bath towels and matching bath mat. Freshen the space naturally by placing a vase filled with purple hydrangeas on a vanity table.

    Red

    • Create a spicy look in your kitchen with an all-red decor scheme. Incorporate a coordinating decor theme, such as roosters, cherries or chili peppers, into the scheme as a touch of whimsy. Paint the walls in a deep red shade. Place a red cloth over the kitchen table. Create a centerpiece with red roses or daisies. Hang red dish towels that feature your decor theme on a baker's rack. Decorate the countertop with canisters that displays the same red pattern.
