How to Decorate a High Platform Above an Entryway

Take your inspiration from an art gallery and decorate a platform above an entryway with a sculptural tableau. Depending on the style and mood of your home, simple objects or works of art can set off your entryway. The entryway creates the first impression of your home, and a high platform can act as a stage for a display that expresses your tastes. Make the most of a high platform by selecting three-dimensional items to display. You may need an assistant to safely decorate a high platform.

Instructions

Measure the platform. Extend the measuring tape from the front edge to the wall at the back for the depth and from one side of the platform to the other for the width. Measure the height from the platform to any architectural feature that might affect the height of your display, such as an angled ceiling, pendant light or beam.

    • 2

Cut a piece of butcher paper or arrange newspapers to match the depth and width measurements for the platform. Spread the paper on a table or the floor.

    • 3

Arrange objects on the paper to create the display for the platform. This makes the display easier to install than having to move the items around on the high platform until you get it right. Use an odd number of objects and create balance by putting the largest or tallest object near the center. For example, display a large giraffe in the center with a smaller giraffe on each side. Angle the bodies so they will show the best from the doorway -- a giraffe standing at a 45-degree angle shows more of the sculpture than if the giraffe faced the viewer head-on.

    • 4

Measure the positions of the objects. For example, note that the central object is six inches from the front edge of the platform and each of the smaller objects are 12 inches from the central object.

Mount a ladder and have an assistant hand each item up to you. Position the display on the platform, placing the objects at the same locations you chose on the paper. Use a tape measure to get the locations and distances right.
