Hallway Desk Ideas

Although a hallway might seem like nothing more than a narrow connecting pathway, by adding a small desk, you actually can turn the area into a functioning space. To conserve room, use a table with flat back edges so it can sit directly against the wall and only use chairs that fit completely under the table.
  1. Writing Space

    • Practice the lost art of letter writing by turning the hallway into a small writing space. Place a desk set on the table and top with personalized stationery, fountain pens and an address book. Mount a cloth bulletin board on the wall just over the desk and cover it with any necessary reminders, like upcoming appointments. Make certain the table includes a small but comfortable chair. You also can leave a checkbook, bills and bank or credit card statements inside the table’s drawers, but make certain to keep it locked.

    Vanity Area

    • Turning the hallway into a vanity proves useful in homes with limited bathroom space. Put an old-fashioned hat box on top of the table and fill the inside with light scarves. Add a wrought-iron mirror to the top of the desk and fill a toile fabric-covered basket with such items as lipstick, lip balm, brushes and combs. For added style, top the table with a rustic wooden hat stand covered in vintage apparel, like a colorful millinery or a crocheted beret. If possible, hang a small, shabby and chic chandelier over the desk.

    Family History

    • A house should relay a family’s storied history, and what better spot for such a task than the home’s entryway? Celebrate your family by topping the table with photo albums and frames filled with old family photos. Include treasured family heirlooms as well, such as war medals or antique watches. If possible, display the items in a shadow box. Also consider hanging a detailed family tree on the wall over the desk.

    Electronics

    • Move your house into the modern age by turning the hallway into an electronics paradise. Use the table as a place for storing your most-used electronics, including your laptop, cell phone and MP3 player, as well as all of their accompanying chargers. Many electronic stores sell wood and leather caddies designed specifically for holding electronic devices. Make certain an outlet lies underneath the table.
