How to Fill a Low Spot for a Pre-Made Shower Base

You need to make sure you have a level subfloor before installing a pre-made shower base. If the subfloor isn't level under the installation area, water will collect in the corner of the base that sits on your subfloor's low spot. Remedying the problem prior to installing the shower base is a straightforward process, whatever material the subfloor is made from.

Instructions

  1. Wood Subfloor

    • 1

Use a bubble level to identify the subfloor's low spot.

    • 2

Place shims of different sizes in the low spot and use the bubble level to work out which thickness of shim creates an even surface.

    • 3

Nail the shim into position to create a level subfloor on which to install your pre-made shower base.

    Concrete Subfloor

    • 4

Use a bubble level to identify the subfloor's low spot.

    • 5

Mix a batch of self-leveling cement with water in a bucket as per the manufacturer's instructions. Stir it well with a stick until it reaches a smooth consistency.

    • 6

Pour the self-leveling cement into the subfloor's low spot and smooth the surface with a trowel.

    • 7

Allow the cement to dry completely before attempting to install the shower base.
