How to Make a Square Canopy for a Twin Bed

When added to a bed, a canopy gives a whimsical appearance to the sleeping space. Depending on the material, it can either let light through or serve as a way to block it out. While canopy bed frames can be quite expensive, it’s possible to make your own in the shape of a square. Mount it from the ceiling above your twin bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut four equal sections of PVC pipe with a scroll saw. Cut each one to a length of 36 inches, which ensures a width that will cover the twin bed.

    • 2

Arrange the PVC pipe pieces to form a square. Connect them at the corners by popping the ends into 2-way PVC joints.

    • 3

Locate the center of the head of your twin bed. Measure 18 inches inward and make a mark on the ceiling. Drill a pilot hole and screw a pot rack hook into place.

    • 4

Cut four equal pieces of decorative ribbon at least 18 inches in length. The longer you make them, the longer the canopy frame will hang down from the ceiling. Tie each ribbon in one of the four corners of the square PVC pipe frame. Tie the ribbons in a knot near the center of the square.

Hang the PVC pipe frame from the pot rack hook above the twin bed. Measure from the floor up to the edge of the square frame. Double this number and add an additional 36 inches, to determine the length of fabric you’ll need. Cut a piece of fabric to this length. Cut the fabric to a width of 36 inches or wider. The wider you make it, the thicker the canopy will be.

Drape the fabric piece over the square frame hanging from the ceiling and arrange it so it falls evenly on either side.
