How to Make a Fabric Breakfast Nook

Whether part of a large kitchen or featured as an alcove off the kitchen, a breakfast nook makes a relaxing space where you can enjoy your morning cup of coffee in peace. If you're interested in taking additional steps towards making your breakfast nook more private, you can use assorted fabric pieces to create fabric breakfast nooks. All fabric should feature the same color scheme for continuity; choose soothing tones such as gray-blues, pale purples and yellows, off-white shades and beige-greens.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang a curtain rod between the two walls that serve as your breakfast nook entrance. Use an adjustable curtain rod that is easy to lengthen and shorten as needed for simple installation. Once you have the rod adjusted to size, take it down and thread your chosen curtain(s) through the rod to create a moveable fabric entrance to your breakfast nook. Use sheer, lightweight curtains, allowing you to see the nook through the fabric, or use heavier curtains to create a private dining space. Strips of fabric may be used to tie the curtains back individually or may be attached to the walls with tacks to create loops for threading lightweight curtains. Heavier curtain tassels can be used to tie back thicker curtains.

Hang curtains that match the curtain door you have created on your breakfast nook's windows, if applicable. Most nooks feature large windows; wrap additional long fabric pieces around curtain rods as hanging, do-it-yourself valances.

    • 3

Make your own cushions for nook benches or chairs using memory foam cut to size and upholstery fabric. Use a basic stitch to cover the cushions in your chosen fabric. You also have the option of reusing throw pillows or old couch cushions so long as they are the right size and are comfortable to sit on. Any cushions and pillows should match the color scheme or pattern of your curtains.

Place a fabric tablecloth over your breakfast nook table. Use a vinyl tablecloth underneath to help protect the table; both the vinyl and fabric tablecloths should match the breakfast nook's color scheme.
