Ornamental Wheat Grass Arrangements

Wheat grass first gained notoriety in the health food sector as a nutritious supplement for use in blended drinks and other recipes. However, Its vibrant green color and uniform growing pattern made it a natural and simple adornment for restaurant and bar tables. Soon thereafter, it made its way into amateur and professional floral arrangements and centerpieces due to this aesthetic appeal.
  1. Everyday Arrangements

    • Wheat grass is a functional alternative to ferns and other greenery traditionally paired with flowers in ornamental arrangements. You can arrange it in one even height or carefully trim it into shapes that add depth and texture to the displays. Create a flower bouquet effect by sticking a variety of brightly colored cut flowers of different lengths into the center of a wheat grass clump. Make a dramatic candle display by pressing a circle of wheat grass into a votive candle holder and placing a small tapered candle in the middle surrounded by the heads of several delicate flowers. Dress up a soap dish in the guest bathroom by cradling it in a bed of wheat grass spiked with a few tiny flowers. Place a healthy circle of wheat grass on a saucer and set a brightly colored votive candle in the middle.

    Wheat Grass Centerpieces

    • Larger clumps of wheat grass make good bases for table centerpieces and runners. Fill a pretty metal pan with shiny multicolored pebbles and arrange the wheat grass on top, leaving a 1 inch border to expose the pebbles. Embed the stems of several tall flowers in the center for an exotic centerpiece. Lay a circular piece of wheat grass on a large plate and evenly space flowers on the surface of the wheat grass and around the edges. Set a black mesh bowl in the center to let the colors of the wheat grass and flowers show through. For a larger centerpiece, add an ivy or fern leaf border around the base of the wheat grass. Build a unique flower garden table runner by filling a low profile flower box painted in a pastel color with wheat grass, then strategically placing gerbera daisies down the center.

    Holiday Specialties

    • Make an Easter basket from wheat grass by cutting it into the desired shape, then covering the edges with wide ribbon tied into a large bow. Lay colored eggs, candy and decorative novelties on the surface. Instead of using plastic grass to line a traditional wicker Easter basket, press a wheat grass “lawn” into the bottom of the basket and lay the bounty on top. Give holiday poinsettias a new look by surrounding them with wheat grass.

    Creative Alternatives

    • Create eye-catching home decor with wheat grass and knickknacks. If you have a figurine or vase that has a holder on it, such as a burro or elephant with carrying containers on their backs, fill them with wheat grass to give them a fresh, new look. Give the room an earthy ambiance by placing clumps of wheat grass in thick, clear glass display cubes and columns that reveal the grass growing from the rich soil beneath it.
