Ideas for How to Decorate Frames Above a Sofa

When a large, decorative frame is hung over a sofa, it becomes the focal point of the space. A focal point grabs your attention upon entering a room, so hang decorative frames that pull the overall look of the space together. A grouping of frames can create a cohesive style, too.
  1. Paint

    • Paint a picture frame to give your living room a vibrant pop of color. If your living room or sofa features neutral shades, such as beige, black or white, paint the frame an eye-catching red or turquoise shade. You can paint the entire frame one color, or use a different color on each side for a creative look. You can also use stencils to customize the frames with themed designs, such as flowers or birds. As an eclectic touch, group several frames featuring similar shapes and complementary bright colors, such as sunny yellow and orange, together.

    Buttons

    • Create an artistic-looking space by decorating wooden picture frames with buttons. Paint the frames, if you desire, and allow them to thoroughly dry before decorating them with buttons. Use a hot glue gun to attach the buttons all around the perimeter of the frame, or just in the corners, depending on your preference. If the frame is a wide one, you can create designs with the buttons, such as flowers or curlicues. Choose buttons to reflect a specific design style, such as silver and black versions for a modern look, or vintage flower-shaped versions as a sweet, homey touch.

    Seashells

    • Seashell-embellished picture frames give your living room plenty of beach house appeal. Start the project by painting the frames a sea-inspired color such as turquoise or watery blue. Glue small seashells all around the perimeter of the frames, or decorate just the corners with large seashells. Add other beach-themed items, such as vibrantly hued sea glass or starfish, for a varied look. Seashell frames work well when placed above a casual-looking sofa constructed of wicker or rattan.

    Glass Gems

    • Give your living room a glamorous look by decorating picture frames with sparkling glass gems. Choose flat-backed gems featuring colors that reflect the overall style of the living room. Glass gems are available in a wide variety of colors, such as gold, black, pink, blue and red, so you can create a completely customized look. Use a variety of gem colors to create a mosaic pattern, or stick with one color to match a specific decor theme. If the couch is situated near a window, the sunlight will reflect off of the gems and create a prism effect.
