Ideas for Rearranging Furniture for a More Inviting Parlor Area

Create a Focal Point

• Place a large, plush rug in the center of the parlor as the room's focal point. The rug will bring peoples' eyes to the middle of the room and provide a starting point for the furniture arrangement. Place a large couch made of a comfortable fabric, such as cotton or linen, on one side of the rug. Place a love seat at a 90-degree angle from the couch to create a cozy feel. Set a coffee table in the middle of the rug to hold drinks or snack bowls.

Individual Sections

• Divide a large parlor into sections to create several warm and inviting spaces. For instance, designate one area of the parlor for watching TV and movies, and another for reading. Design a comfortable reading nook with a plush armchair or recliner, a standing lamp and a small side table. Use a bookcase to section the space off from the rest of the room.

Conversational Spaces

• If you love to entertain, encourage guest interaction by arranging chairs in small groups. Set two armchairs at a 90-degree angle from each other with a small rug in the middle at one corner. In another area, place two love seats face-to-face with a rectangular coffee table in the center. Tie the conversation spaces together with matching throw pillows and blankets.

• Create a relaxing parlor space by providing plenty of casual seating. If the the space features a fireplace, place groupings of oversize, decorative pillows in front of it so friends and family members can lounge in front of the fire.
