Neutral Colors Used for Multiple Decorating Styles

No matter what your home decorating style is, neutral colors will complement it. Neutral colors are versatile in that they blend with both light and dark hues. Neutrals are often used in home decorating to tone down bright hues or tie two contrasting colors together. Work neutrals into a room to lighten the look or start with neutral-hued furniture and introduce other colors into the scheme.
  1. White

    • White furniture or decor will instantly brighten up the look of any room. If the space has a nautical-inspired style with plenty of red and navy blue details, incorporate white into the scheme for a fresh, crisp look. For instance, place white pillows on a red or blue couch, and hang vintage maritime maps in whitewashed frames. Accent a tropical-inspired room featuring bright yellow, green and orange shades with a white wicker couch and gauzy white curtains to create a breach house vibe.

    Ecru

    • Ecru is a warmer, creamier version of white and blends well with rich colors and dark woods. The color will lend a luxe look to any room style. If your living room or bedroom features elegant mahogany or cherry wood furniture, complement it with ecru textiles. Place a plush, ecru rug under a coffee table, and fold a cream-colored cashmere blanket over the back of a couch. Place an ecru comforter on a bed and accent it with matching curtains.

    Gray

    • The color gray complements a variety of cool colors and will give a room a modern look. To infuse a room with a calm vibe, paint the walls a light gray color. Incorporate nature-inspired details, such as a woven-leather table or bamboo furniture into the look to create a relaxing respite. Gray walls will look anything but drab when combined with vibrant sky blue furniture and textiles. Use gunmetal gray walls, textiles or furniture pieces to complement a sleek room featuring silver and black details.

    Taupe

    • Taupe, which is a sandy brown color, will complete everything from a tropical- to garden-inspired room. Accent a taupe couch with a palm green or banana yellow throw blanket and matching decorative pillows to give a neutral room a vibrant pop of color. A coordinating green or yellow rug will bring the look together. If your bedroom has a garden theme, offset a bold, flower-pattered comforter and bright curtains with taupe walls. Include additional taupe details, such as a rug or lamp shade, to create a cohesive look.
