Texas-Themed Living Room Ideas

Armed with slogans like “Don’t Mess With Texas,” a host of native Texans take a great deal of pride in their state, with some even designing living rooms with Texas-themed decor. Such a room offers a down-home feel, complete with items that celebrate the “Lone Star” state’s storied history, including its resident cowboys and Old West setting.
  1. Furnishings

    • Fill the living room with rustic furnishings, such as leather couches or animal-print sofas with cowhide patterns. Top the couches with denim pillows of varying sizes, some of which may include Western-style red handkerchiefs tied around them. Use coffee tables outfitted with elk antlers as legs or wagon wheels covered with circular-cut, glass table tops. Additional furnishings include hardwood hutches or bookshelves.

    Lighting

    • Try lamps equipped with antlers in place of the stand and rawhide covers for lampshades. For hanging lights, install a wrought-iron chandelier outfitted with electric candle-shaped light fixtures. You may also use old-fashioned lantern wall sconces. For a decorative touch, plug in night lights throughout the room with cowboy-themed designs.

    Accessories

    • Throw a cowhide patterned rug in the middle of the room. Cover the coffee table with biographies on famed Texans like Sam Houston, Davy Crockett and Lyndon Johnson. Hang items on the wall like lassos and horseshoes. Line the bookshelf with cowboy-boot bookends and memorabilia commemorating Texas sports teams, like framed sports programs, game day tickets and autographed jerseys.

    Walls

    • Hang paintings, photos and sketches highlighting Texas imagery such as cattle, cowboys, the Alamo, Rio Grande and cityscapes like Austin, Dallas and Houston. Personalize the room by framing photos from your own Texas vacations or experiences. Use earth-tone paints for the walls, like cream, burnt sienna and chocolate brown. Run a stenciled border along the wall using the Lone Star flag.
