How to Install a Hard Valance With Batting

A window valance neatly caps a window, adding not only style but energy efficiency depending on the type of valance. A valance constructed of hard material, like plywood -- with four sides and an open back and bottom -- is called a cornice board. Cornice boards are frequently padded with batting and covered with fabric to match or complement window treatments. Install a hard valance with a closed top directly above your drapes to keep warm, heated air from being pulled down through the open tops of draperies and onto cold window surfaces, according to Michigan State University Extension.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 1 inch above the top of your drapery rod, 6 inches in from each end of the window. Mark the points with a pencil.

    • 2

Check the locations of the wall studs with a stud finder. Mark the center of the studs between the two endpoints you marked in Step 1. The number of studs you need to mark depends on the width of the valance you are installing. No studs need to be marked on a window up to 36 inches, one stud up to 64 inches, two up to 94 inches and three up to 120 inches.

    • 3

Hold up an L-bracket to one endpoint with the bottom leg of the "L" against the wall and its top leg extending above that leg, perpendicular to the wall. Place a level on top of the bracket and mark the wall through the two holes in the lower bracket leg when the bubble on the level is centered. Repeat at the other end and on each marked stud.

    • 4

Drill a hole into each point marked with an electric drill. Install the appropriate type of anchor on each endpoint if there was no stud behind these points.

    • 5

Install the L-brackets with the provided screws and a screwdriver at each set of pilot holes.

    • 6

Place the top side of the hard valance with batting over the L-brackets so it is resting on the top of the perpendicular legs of the brackets. Ensure it is centered over the window.

    • 7

Mark through the holes on the bracket from the underside of the valance. Drill pilot holes through the holes and secure the valance with screws.
