Weather Vane Home Decorating

It seems nowadays more people use weather vanes for home decorating than for practical purposes. In earlier days, farmers used weather vanes to quickly figure out which way the wind was blowing. If you are a fan of these weather instruments, you can incorporate them into your home decor, whether indoors or out.
  1. Kitchen

    • Decorate your kitchen with weather vane-themed items, such as hand towels, pictures, stove top burner covers and magnets for the refrigerator. If you have cabinets with extra room to decorate above them, place a few weather vanes on top of the cabinets. Weather vanes are available online and at many retail stores in a variety of sizes and styles. Paint the weather vanes to match the color scheme in your kitchen.

    Bedroom

    • Hang pictures and posters of weather vanes on your bedroom walls. If you have an artistic flair, consider adding a mural on one of the bedroom walls. Use an overhead projector to enlarge a picture of a weather vane onto the wall then paint the image in acrylic paints. There are also country-themed wallpaper murals available if you're less artistically-inclined. Use stencils and acrylic paint to paint weather vanes on basic curtains to hang in the room. Add a country-themed comforter or quilt to go along with the theme. Look for weather vane throw pillows at a home goods store to toss on the bed. If you cannot find weather vane throw pillows, consider making your own with a needlepoint weather vane pattern. Add a backing, stuff it with batting and sew it up to create your own weather vane throw pillow.

    Around the Home

    • Tall, standing weather vanes are available at hardware stores and online. Place one of them in a corner or on both sides of an entertainment center. Use small weather vanes as a centerpiece for a dining room or end table. Other weather vane-themed items you can use to decorate your home include bookends, blankets, books, mirrors, metal wall art and vases. Look for weather vane area rugs or runners, as well as a welcome mat with a country-inspired theme to tie the decor together.

    Outdoors

    • Add a copper or brass weather vane to your rooftop. These weather vanes have a long-lasting finish that will hold up to the elements. Place weather vanes around your home in the yard or garden. Use stencils and paint to decorate large rocks or stepping stones to place in your garden or around the landscape. Hang weather vane wind chimes from trees or on the patio for a whimsical look.
