How to Put an Awning Over Kitchen Cabinets

Add the flair of a French bistro to your kitchen by placing decorative awnings over your kitchen cabinets. The only restriction you face is that the awnings must be positioned so as not to interfere with the opening and closing of your kitchen cabinets. The project requires a basic knowledge of sewing and supplies available commonly at most craft or sewing stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your cabinet and add 2 inches: if your awning is to span several cabinets, measure between the two furthest separate cabinets. Cut two dowels rods and the width of your fabric to this measurement.

    • 2

Fold down the top edge of your fabric, with wrong sides together, and sew together to form a sleeve large enough to hold the dowel. Insert a dowel through the sleeve so that 1 inch protrudes from each end.

    • 3

Place the dowel over the cabinet high enough to provide a slope to the bottom of the awning. Remember that the bottom of the awning must be above the cabinet. Place a bracket on each end of the dowel and attach the top of the awning to the wall with screws. Do not tighten the bracket completely because you still must remove the awning for the final fitting.

    • 4

Position the decorative rods parallel to each other, and in line with the brackets, slightly above the top of the cabinets. Put the second dowel onto the fittings at the ends of the decorative rods.

    • 5

Drape the awning fabric over the lower dowel and mark the leading edge of the fabric. Remove the awning from the wall and cut the fabric to length. Sew a sleeve along the bottom edge of the fabric for the second dowel and place the dowel through the sleeve.

    • 6

Return the awning to the wall, secure the brackets and place the bottom dowel onto the ends of the decorative rods.
