How to Install Tile on a Plastic Shower Base

Plastic fiberglass showers may be inexpensive and efficient, but can take away from the overall look of your bathroom. One option is to install decorative ceramic tiles over the plastic shower base. Professional craftsman can install ceramic tiles, but hiring a professional is costly. Save money by putting in the ceramic tiles over the plastic base yourself -- using a few basic tools and supplies found at any hardware or home-improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean off the inside of the plastic fiberglass shower using soap and water, then rinse the shower out completely.

    • 2

Dry the inside of the shower with a towel to remove all moisture.

    • 3

Spread a 1/4-inch-thick layer of thin-set mortar over the entire surface of the fiberglass shower base using a trowel, then run a mortar rake over the mortar to create grooves.

    • 4

Press 1/4-inch-thick ceramic tiles halfway into the mortar, spacing them 1/4-inch apart.

    • 5

Place 1/4-inch spacers in between each tile to hold the tiles in place, then allow the mortar to dry for 12 to 18 hours.

    • 6

Remove the spacers, then spread a 1/4-inch-thick layer of medium grout over the tile-covered shower base, using the trowel. Scrape the trowel across the tiles to remove any excess grout.

    • 7

Wipe a damp sponge over the surface of each tile, then allow the tiled shower base to dry for 12 to 18 hours before use.
