How to Make a Children's Canopy Daybed

A child’s bed is more than just a place to sleep. It’s also a place to explore the imagination and host friends. Give your child a bed that encourages her to pretend, makes her feel special and allows her to receive a restful night's sleep. Creating a canopy over your child's bed transforms it from an ordinary bed to a place that invites wonder and creativity, while offering shelter and comfort.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a decorative ribbon that coordinates with the room’s color or style. Cut six to eight 66-inch lengths of ribbon.

    • 2

Place a dot of hot glue about every 8 to 10 inches around the perimeter of a standard hula-hoop. Place the dots of glue on top of the hoop. Tie the ends of the ribbons around the hoop, so that they sit on top of the hot glue. Tie each of the ends of the ribbons in double knots securing them in place.

    • 3

Place the loose ends of the ribbons in the hoop’s center. Collect the ribbons together and tie them into a loop.

    • 4

Cut two lengths of tulle 4- to 5-yards each. Locate the center point in each of the lengths of tulle with a measuring tape. Mark the center point on each of the lengths of tulle with a fine-tip marker.

    • 5

Use a craft knife to cut a small slit through the mark on each of the lengths of tulle.

    • 6

Feed the loop of ribbons on the end of the hoop through the hole on one of the lengths of tulle.

    • 7

Lay the second piece of tulle over the top of the hoop so that it forms an X-shape with already attached length of tulle. Feed the loop of ribbons through the hole in the second piece of tulle.

    • 8

Screw a cup hook into the ceiling above the center of the day bed. Attach the loop of ribbons to the cup hook. Fan out the lengths of tulle over the bed.
