How to Build a Room Separator

Separate a room and add to the decor of the space with a custom-built room divider. Whether you want to separate a shared bedroom or delineate an open floor plan into distinct spaces, a room divider can help you split the space while adding decorative interest to the divided areas. Scout three shutters and with some hinges and standard tools, you can create a custom-built folding room divider.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate three wooden shutters that are roughly the same size. Visit a thrift store or a salvage yard to create a charming, antique looking screen. Alternatively, you could purchase new shutters from a home improvement store.

    • 2

Place the shutters side-by-side on a flat surface. Line up the bottom of the shutters, using a level as a guide.

    • 3

Measure 1 foot from the bottom and 1 foot from the top of the inside edge of the first shutter. Set a pair of hinges at each location so that one of the edges of the hinges is lying flat against the side of the shutter. Drill a 2-inch wood screw through each of the holes on the hinges, driving the screws through the shutters.

    • 4

Press the middle shutter up against the opposite side of the hinges that are now attached to the first shutter. Drill 2-inch wood screws through each of the holes on the hinges, driving them through the side of the middle shutter.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 to attach the middle shutter to the remaining shutter.

    • 6

Attach self-adhesive furniture glides to each of the edges along the bottom of each of the shutters.
