How to Make a Bed out of Doors

Prevent old wooden doors from filling space in a landfill by transforming them into the headboard and footboard of a one-of-a-kind bed. Either use old doors that you already own or purchase doors from a thrift store or salvage yard. Spruce up the doors with some paint or stain, if you wish, or leave them as-is to create a rustic look. With some basic tools, you can turn the doors into striking frames for a bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and height of the top and bottom of the bed frame.

    • 2

Cut 3/4-inch thick plywood boards to equal the dimensions you took in Step 1. If you're not confident in your cutting abilities, have the professionals at a home improvement store cut the wood for you.

    • 3

Cut one door so it equals the width of the top of the bed. Cut another door so it is the same width as the bottom of the bed. Again, if you're not comfortable making the cuts yourself, ask the professionals at a home improvement store to cut the doors for you.

    • 4

Measure the length of the top and sides of each door. Cut crown molding to equal that size.

    • 5

Attach the crown molding to the top and sides of each door. Use a drill to insert 6-inch long wood screws through the ends and the center of the molding and into the doors, creating a decorative cap on the doors.

    • 6

Lay the cut doors on their sides. Position the pieces of plywood on the bottom and side portions of each door.

    • 7

Insert one 6- to 8-inch long wood screw through the top, middle and bottom of each door end and into the plywood. Also place a screw in the middle of each door to attach it to the plywood.

    • 8

Position the plywood-covered part of the door on the top and bottom of the bed frame. Drive 1 1/2-inch long wood screws through the holes on each of the outer edges of the bed frame and into the plywood on the doors.
