How to Make Easy Room Divider Doors

Room dividers break up a large room into cozier areas or they hide unattractive features in a room. They also can add color and style because they can be decorated any way you want. One of the easiest ways to create room dividers is by using door panels. Hollow-core doors come in a variety of widths and are ideal for using as room dividers because they are lightweight and provide a large surface area for painting or covering with your chosen materials.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 hollow-core doors

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the door and divide the number in half. You can measure the distance either from the top or bottom of the door to find the middle and mark the middle lightly with a pencil. You will center the middle hinge at that point.

    • 2

Lay two door panels with one on top of the other with their right sides together. Place one of the hinges so one leaf, or arm, of the hinge is on the bottom panel and the other hinge leaf is on the other. Using the pencil, make a mark inside each screw hole. Remove the hinge.

    • 3

Drill pilot holes where the screw holes are marked.

    • 4

Replace the hinge, lining up the screw holes of the hinge with the pilot holes. Attach the hinge by screwing in the screws that came with the hinge. Do this with each leaf of the hinge.

    • 5

Mark the screw holes for the upper hinge about 6 or 7 inches from the top of the screen. Attach the upper hinge the same way you did for the center hinge.

    • 6

Mark the screw holes for the lower hinge about 6 or 7 inches from the bottom and attach the hinge the same way.

    • 7

Place the third door panel on top of the two joined panels so the right side of the new panel faces up and the new panel and top joined panel have the wrong side facing each other. The hinges for this third panel will go on the opposite side from the installed hinges of the first two panels so that the resulting hinge action will form a zigzag pattern as with any typical folding screen.

Position the middle hinge as you did before, mark it, drill pilot holes and attach the hinge with the screws. Do this for the top and bottom hinges, placing them 6 or 7 inches from the top and bottom of the door panel.

Set the room divider up and arrange the panels in the zigzag formation so it is balanced securely.
