How to Enclose a Basement Beam

A basement beam offers your home increased stability and support, but it also gives your home a distinctly industrial appearance. If you are tired of the bare steel or wood beam in the middle of your basement, enclose it with a flexible pole wrap, which may also be marketed as a lally cover. Pole wraps, which are available from a wide variety of manufacturers, cover the beam with an acrylic or wood sheathing. Use a pole wrap to give your basement a more finished appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of your beam from floor to ceiling.

    • 2

Roll up the pole wrap tightly and trim it down to the measurement you found in step 1 using a circular saw. The saw should be fitted with a fine-toothed blade.

    • 3

Wrap the pole wrap around the beam. The ends of the pole wrap should meet snugly around the beam itself. If the wrap is too large, trim it to size with a utility knife.

    • 4

Apply construction adhesive to the beam in small beads. There should be at least one bead every 10 inches. Pay special attention to the place where the ends of the pole wrap will meet.

    • 5

Wrap the pole wrap around the beam, holding it in place for a few seconds to allow the construction adhesive to grab.

    • 6

Cinch three or four cable ties along the length of the beam to hold the wrap in place as the adhesive dries.

    • 7

Allow the adhesive to cure for at least 24 hours before removing the cable ties.
