How to Build Your Own Baseboard Radiant Cover

If the heat in your home comes from baseboard radiant heat, odds are you have the basic, plain metal covering over the heaters. You may find commercially made covers to disguise these heaters, but they can be costly. Instead, build your own baseboard radiant cover by attaching galvanized carbon steel screening to the metal baseboard with magnets. Use precise measurements to create a radiant cover that extends seamlessly over the baseboard heater.

  Measure the length and height of the baseboard heater.

  Cut galvanized carbon steel screen with wire cutters according to the measurements.

  Hold the metal screen over the baseboard radiant heater to ensure a precise fit. The edge of the screen must come right to the edge of the heater without overlapping. You use the existing end cap with this cover.

  Roll out self-adhesive magnetic weather stripping to fit the length of the baseboard heater. Peel off the paper backing and place the stripping along the edge of the carbon steel screen lengthwise. Attach another piece of stripping to the bottom edge of the screening lengthwise.

  Attach the screen to the metal baseboard heater by pressing the top edge of the screen with the magnetic stripping to the metal. Curve the screen down over the baseboard heater and attach the magnetic stripping along the bottom edge of the screen.
