How to Redesign a Basement

A finished basement adds valuable square footage to a home. This space can serve as a kid's play area, a family room or an office, for instance. If you're unhappy with the current design of your basement, or you just want to update the look of the space, redesign it to suit your needs and your taste.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide if you want to make any structural changes to the basement. For example, you may want to make a room in the basement bigger, or you may want to put up a wall to create separate rooms.

    • 2

Choose new flooring for the basement. There are several choices to consider, including carpeting, laminate and tile. Select the material that best suits your needs. For example, if the space will be used for a children's play area, stain-resistant carpeting may be the best option.

    • 3

Consider the type of ceiling you want to use for the basement. Options include a drop ceiling and a wallboard ceiling. If you want to have easy access to any pipes and electrical wiring that run through your basement and into the rest of the house, a removable drop ceiling is your best option. For a more attractive, permanent feature, opt for a wallboard ceiling.

Decide how you want to embellish the walls of the basement. Paint is easy to apply and comes in a myriad of colors. Wallpaper allows you to add design, color and texture to the walls. Wainscoting is another option, and this material will add an architectural element to the space.

Consider lighting for the space. Recessed lighting, track lighting and flush ceiling-mounted light fixtures are all options. You can use a single type of lighting, or you can use a combination of these lighting options for your basement.

Decide on furniture pieces to bring into the space. Purchase functional pieces that will work for the intended use of the basement. A large sectional sofa and an entertainment center are pieces that would work for a basement family room. A desk, sliding chair and filing cabinets are pieces to consider for a basement office.
