How to Build a Recreational Room

Choose the site for your recreational room. An unused room or a basement is an ideal location for this space.

Paint the walls of the room. Select a color scheme that speaks to your style to reflect your personal taste; for example, the colors of your favorite sports team. Alternatively, opt for neutral colors to create a neutral backdrop for the space.

Cover the floor of the room with carpeting or area rugs to add warmth to the room. Choose a rug or a carpet that suits your style -- a shag rug or a low-piled rug, for example. Consider choosing a floor covering that is treated with a stain-resistant chemical.

Determine spaces in the room. For example, pick an area for watching television and playing video games, an area for playing table games and an area for large equipment, such as a pool table.

Select furnishings for the room. Choose furnishings that allow you to use the room in the way that you want. For example, if you want to have a space for video games and television use, select a comfortable sofa and chairs. If you're intent on playing table games, like card games or board games, select circular tables and comfortable chairs. Arrange the furnishings in the spaces you have intended for them.

Bring in a television and a media system. Choose a television that will fit into the space you intend to use it in. Select a stereo system that can be hooked up to the television to create a surround sound effect. Bring in video gaming equipment.

Add storage to the space. Use an entertainment stand to house the television, other media and video gaming equipment. Mount shelves on the walls for storage of DVDs and games. Consider using shelves that have door fronts to hide clutter, to give the room a neater appearance.
