How to Avoid the Glare on Granite Kitchen Countertops

Granite counters are used in many modern kitchens. They are attractive, durable and easy to clean. However, polished marble is so reflective it can cause glare in a room. This can cause a problem in a room with strong lighting. If you are dealing with granite glare, there are both temporary and permanent solutions. Avoid granite glare by choosing granite with a matte finish before you install it.

Install soft lighting in the room by adding lamps or strip lighting with frosted covers. This breaks up the light and spreads it around the room more so you don't have harsh light reflected off the granite. Avoid puck lights, which create a "headlight effect" on glossy counters. Use natural sunlight as much as possible.

Refinish the polished granite so it has a honed surface. According to Old House Interiors writer, Mary Ellen Polson, this is best left to a professional. However, refinishing kits are available. Sand the counters until you get the amount of shine that you desire. To avoid the glare, leave the surfaces slightly matte.

Cover the counters with fabric to avoid the glare. Use table runners or other decorative fabric on areas that are not frequently used. This is particularly effective on areas that are directly under strong lighting, such as pot lights.
