How to Trim the Flooring at the Opening of the Stairs

The staircase is an essential architectural feature of your home and it commands a large share of visual attention simply due to its regular use. As you go up your stairway, you may notice that the area around the stairway seems dull and plain. This is especially common in open plan stairways, like those leading up to the attic or up to the main floor from the basement. Use basic wood molding to create a more textured, trimmed look for your staircase.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the stairway opening where the trim will be applied. If necessary, use a ladder to reach the opening. Be very careful when doing this, as this may involve mounting a ladder on the stairway itself. In many cases, however, you will be able to reach the opening without a problem.

    • 2

Add the width of your wood trim to any piece that meets another piece once, and add twice the width of the wood trim to any piece that meets another piece twice.

    • 3

Cut with a saw pieces of molding to measurements you found in step 2.

    • 4

Bevel the edges of the molding to 45 degrees as needed using a miter saw.

    • 5

Apply a thin layer of adhesive caulk to the flat back of the molding.

    • 6

Press each piece of molding to the appropriate edge of the staircase opening, fitting the edges together like a picture frame.
