How to Decorate a Closed Fireplace Wall

Paint the wall surrounding the fireplace in an earthy color that complements the rest of the room's decor. The fireplace represents natural elements, so earthy hues will work well with the flames. Natural colors don't have to be dark or drab. You can opt for browns or creams, but if you want to add color, try forest green, sienna or yellow ocher.

Hang a large painting, photograph or piece of art above the fireplace. The piece should complement the room's decor and draw attention to the fireplace. The fireplace is the main focal point in the room, so the two pieces should work together to draw the eye.

Place medium or large items on either side of the fireplace in a position that attracts attention to the fireplace. For example, if you have closed gas fireplace set at eye level, installing floating shelves on either side and set a large mask on each shelf. If the closed fireplace is lower, put tall, pottery vases on either side. Use items that complement each other but aren't exactly alike.
